COLUMBIA and SNAKE RIVER

The Snake River is the largest and longest tributary of the Columbia River (which is the largest North American River that empties into the Pacific Ocean). The river is 1,040 miles long and provides a pristine opportunity for boating, houseboating, skiing, wakeboarding, fishing, and many other recreational activities.

The Columbia River is the largest hydroelectric power producing river on the entire continent of North America. Over it's length, there are fourteen different hydroelectric dams that span the width of the river and produce power. The river starts in Canada and flows south into and through Washington State before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. More than 40 percent of the wheat that is exported from the United States travels by barge down the Columbia River. This river is one of the most used and needed resources in the Pacific Northwest because of it's power production, transportation, commerce, and recreation.

TRI-CITIES COLUMBIA CUP BOAT RACES

2011 marks the 46th annual running of the Columbia Cup for Unlimited Hydroplanes. Held annually the last weekend in July, this high speed action on the water and in the air takes place at Columbia Park in Kennewick. The boat races are the main attraction of the Water Follies Festivities. Also known as thunderboats, the hydroplane when travelling at full speed on the water are held primarily aloft by a principle known as 'planing'. Only a tiny fraction of the hull actually touches the water!
